St. Louis’ Lambert Airport needs sleeping rooms

December 26, 2009 Travel 15 Comments

Earlier this month the idea of airport sleeping rooms caught my attention in the news:

Tiny airport sleeping rooms — similar to the cubicles that Asian travelers use to catch a snooze in between flights — have arrived in America.

Atlanta, the world’s largest airport, opened five Minute Suites this month where tired passengers can doze for $30 an hour. The rooms — 7 feet by 8 feet, or about the size of two office cubicles put together — are equipped with a daybed sofa, pillows (with disposable covers), fresh blankets, a small desk, Internet access and a flat-screen 32-inch monitor with DirecTV and flight information. They have systems to mask noise. (full story: USA Today)

Hopefully airport administrators across the country will be watching Atlanta to see how well this idea works in the states. Creative thinking to serve the needs of travelers could help the airport get more flights.

    These types of amenities most often available at airports where passengers have long (>8 hour) layovers or a significant number of arrivals on red-eye intercontinental flights — like London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris.

    I sincerely doubt there is the need or demand for that type of service in St. Louis — even if we were still a hub the size we were around 2000 — the flight patterns just aren't there to generate the need. Do people really need a place to nap after arriving from Chicago, New York or LA? I don't think so.

      Exactly. Nobody needs a nap after they've rolled in from DFW.

      Amenities Lambert DOES need:
      * Free wifi
      * Laptop charging stations
      * HEALTHY food options (there's a great little shop in O'Hare's United terminal that's got veg and vegan options, healthier drinks, etc — we need one of these). I used to fly 4x a week and hated how the food options in 99% of airports are guaranteed to kill you.
      * More flights (fat chance).

      • Some of us do need naps and I can't rest on waiting room seats. Of course I wouldn't be napping here but I'd like to see all airports have these.

        Totally agree. Lambert lacks any intercontinental flights and hardly any flights to even the west coast. People increasingly do not connect at Lambert, and the short term sleeping rooms only really make much sense at hub airports, where people have long layovers. If you live here or are visiting, your goal is to leave as soon as possible upon arriving at the airport.

    There's plenty of empty space for sleeping rooms at Lambert, that's for sure.

    I think the essence here is that the market place has changed and offering a memorable buzz-worthy experience is paramount to your operation.

    I agree – this idea is likely not for the STL airport but it is ideas like this that bring the cool factor into play. And, we all know that cool sells. Maybe it's not sleeping rooms but maybe a discussion about sleeping rooms brings about a worthy idea that can make a difference.

    • Yes, discussing the experience travelers have in our airport is important to improvements. The airport is going 100% smoke-free soon so the existing smoking rooms will no longer be used. A few sleeping rooms may be a way to re-purpose these spaces.

        To speak as a traveler – I would like a space that afforded me solitude from the hustle that is innate in the airport experience. In that respect – call it a sleep pod, work pod or sleep/work pod – it would be a good [to steal from Southwest] wanna get away – room.

        • Exactly. Space for the person arriving for a business meeting to relax after they arrive, perhaps finish their presentation or make a few business calls.

          The Albany airport has a “meditation room”. It is really nice. It's quiet, with comfortable seats, pillows, serene water fountains and a pretty painting on the wall. When I was in New York state and needed to kill a few hours at the airport, it was a great option.

          We have that. It's called the Admiral's Club.

    Law of Unintended Consequences: rooms by the hour, especially in an anonymous setting, could serve business purposes other than napping, as in those of interest to our vice cops . . .
