PR: City Residents Offered Free Firewood

November 8, 2010 Press Release 7 Comments

The following is a press release:

The City of St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry will offer free firewood to City residents starting Monday, November 8, 2010 on the Lower Muny Opera parking lot in Forest Park.

The wood is available most days after 3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

All wood comes from the removal of dead or damaged trees from City streets and parks. Daily wood supply is not guaranteed and the wood will vary with size and species when left on parking lot for citizens. It is offered on a first come, first served basis. This process ends during the first week in March.

Due to park restrictions, no commercial vehicles or trailers are permitted.

“This is an excellent cost-saving opportunity for both the City and City residents,” said Commissioner of Forestry Greg Hayes. “The City avoids having to dispose of the wood and City residents have a chance to pick up free firewood.”

For more information or questions, please call the Forestry Division at 613-7200.

St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry is a great department which does a great job keeping our city green and working well with all of the outdoor city / civic events, but firewood as a cost saving idea?

why not give residents ameren or laclede credits – we live in a civilized society – where wood burning is really not considered an alternate to gas and electric heat. besides doesn't this only increase the chance for a devastating city fire? nice idea not much forethought.

steve – let me know if you need any help getting your wood allotment.

    • I have no place to burn wood.

Growing up, my parents had a wood burning stove in their living room that was often used to heat their home in the city, or at least supplement it. This was used up to 15 years ago, until they moved.

I think city residents tend to use the wood for aesthetic fires in their fireplaces or exterior fire pits. People use their fireplaces all the time in the city, and there hasn't been a devastating city fire. They have been providing the free fire wood for over 20 years.

It is taking a step out of the process of disposing of the wood. So yes, its saving the labor of taking the wood to a landfill or turning it into mulch.

Um, not sure how the forestry department could provide you with a credit. Additionally, I would say that burning wood for heat is a great alternate to gas and electric heat. Go to any house in rural areas. Most have either exterior wood burning sheds, or interior wood burning stoves. They keep your house hotter than any electric or gas heat source ever could.

I though Steve would favor a ban on wood burning in the City for health reasons:

I don't agree, there are others ways to warm the environment.
