Preservation Board Agenda for December 20th available online

December 15, 2004 Events/Meetings 3 Comments

The Cultural Resources office of the St. Louis Planning & Urban Design Agency has posted their December 20th Agenda.

Three of the four items on the agenda are proposals for new construction in a historic district – two in Lafayette Square and one in Soulard. All look very promising!

The link for the forth item isn’t working at the moment (I sent them a nice email letting them know). It is an appeal of a staff denial at 4239 McPherson in the Central West End.

The meeting starts at 4pm on Monday December 20th at 1015 Locust, 12th floor board room.

It would be great to see the old Salvation Army buildings replaced. This would mitigate some of the negative, de-densifying impact the ludicrous Truman Parkway has had on the eastern edge of Lafayette Square.

I’m still fuming that the little storefront/home at 1554 Lafayette was knocked down for a connector ramp for the “parkway.” What a waste! It was a fine French mansard building facing the City Hospital.

The Truman Parkway is the most ludicrous waste I can imagine. Besides divding a neighborhood that needs no further division it goes NOWHERE! My understanding is that they built this only to narrow 12th between Lafayette and Chouteau. How screwy is that?

Steve- are you able to make this meeting. I cannot but I hope someone can keep up on this. I think these projects will be a great example of how/if the system works. These sites are begging for good projects and I only hope the cultural resource office can stand up and make the most of these projects.

A couple of other comments, maybe they’ll be answered at this meeting. Why does the Vail Place project not go all the way to Mississippi? Does building these condos preclude using the corner lot, or will something else get built on the corner? Additionaly, the westernmost commercial space is proposed to drop down a story- from 2 to 1- I’d like to see it all at three stories. This area needs the density, and it will look out of scale especially if something gets built on the corner of Mississippi.
