DO YOU THINK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS SAFE?
Michael Allen & Claire Nowak-Boyd of the Ecology of Absence website are doing a piece on neighborhood safety and they need your feedback:
We want to know what you think about where you live. Please tell us, in
as many or as few words as you think are necessary, if you think your
neighborhood is safe and why (or why not). We aren’t looking for any
specific type of answer; we just want you to be honest. Please send in answers by May 1, 2005. We will publish your response (As
long as we can read your handwriting!) and all the others in a zine. If
you include your contact information, we’ll send you a copy of the zine
when it’s finished.Send responses to: email, or (if you prefer analog) to

We moved from Chicago to St. Louis almost 2 years ago, and chose Fox Park for a very long list of reasons. To answer the question succinctly, we now feel very safe here. Our neighbors to each side have lived here over 30 years, and most people on the block have been here at least 15 years. That gives us a sense of stability in the neighborhood, not to mention the inside scoop on all sorts of issues. Upon first moving in, the vacant houses nearby spooked us. However, we have come to realize how much the residents look after not only one another but each other’s property. While we wish the vacant houses would become un-vacant and wonderful, (as I am sure they will in the near future), in the meantime we are happy to report that they do not draw the vagrant element, at least on our block and surrounding.
However, we felt a bit differently about the neighborhood for the first few months, because it seemed lonesome. Coming from a much bigger city, we were used to hustle and bustle on sidewalks, “someone” always being around, and cops frequently walking their beats and chatting with residents at el stops, etc. Once we adjusted to the much quieter way of life here, we felt safer in our neighborhood. I guess you could say that our neighborhood was the same all along, we just had to get used to it. We appreciate the neighborhood organization, active Weed and Seed group, camaraderie of the neighbors, kids playing, people walking their dogs, and the quick response time of police and ambulance as factors that make us feel safe and at home here in Fox Park. Hope this helps with your survey.
