St. Louis’ Clifton Heights Neighborhood Quite Unique

It amazes me that some lifetime St. Louis area residents still haven’t discovered the Clifton Heights neighborhood. I love to take visitors through the area as well, after seeing blocks of solid red brick housing in a mostly grid pattern the curvy streets and topography of Clifton Heights is an unexpected change.

I’ve sold two houses in the Clifton Heights neighborhood in the last few years. One just off the lake but still with a good view and another a couple of blocks away. I was back in Clifton Heights on Thursday showing a house to a client. I couldn’t help but grin as I arrived. I love Clifton Heights.

The park is stunning – taking full advantage of the hilly terrain. Simpson Avenue curves its way around the park creating odd shaped building lots. Houses are all at different set backs and few are parallel to each other. Well, at least around the park. Much of the neighborhood continues the normal street grid. Southwest Avenue adds another interesting element to the neighborhood by cutting through much of the grid.

It all comes together beautifully in this neighborhood. Brick and frame buildings mix nicely. Single family, multi-family and commercial buildings are compatible neighbors. Homes are priced in all ranges.

If you don’t know this little oasis in the city I suggest you check it out. Plan on being charmed.

The amazing thing about the park is that it not only takes advantage of the terrain, but it incorporated St. Louis’s most plentiful natural flaw, a huge sinkhole, which was wrangled into becoming the pond.

You gush about the surrounding architecture, but not a single photo of it? If you do not show evidence of this fabulous urban mix around the park, I will be forced to envision a mobile home park instead (with a superb mix of single- and double-wides in varying styles).

I lived in this community for seven years – we were raising six children there.

In the winter time we could walk across the street and sled. The kids and I had contests to see how long a run we could create. Sometimes we had hockey games on the frozen lake.

The rest of the year we could sail boats on the lake, fish in the lake, or play in the fountain that feeds the lake.

You asked to see pictures of the homes… you can see ours at http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1048111106

Ours is not the biggest home in the neighborhood – for some of the real mansions you will have to go and see for yourself. Ours is just across from the playground. Stand on top of the hill above the basketball court and look a little to the right….
