I can’t believe that state and local governments would be willing to financially ruin individual residents to deter opposition to their pet projects. But that is what is happening in downtown St. Louis.

The people who tore down the Century building are not satisfied with having destroyed a structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places; they want to annihilate their opponents and intimidate future ones.

Two of my neighbors who had filed a lawsuit to stop the destruction of the Century Building are now being sued by two developers, the city and the state for $1.5 million in alleged actual damages, plus unspecified punitive damages that they say are designed to deter others from taking legal action in similar situations.

It is shameful that Desco and DFC, the two developers, would take such action. But that the city and state would join them in this lawsuit is simply disgraceful.
