Belleville’s Liese Lumber Using Biodiesel in Delivery Trucks
Local lumberyard Liese Lumber has taken a bold & progressive step — it is now running it’s 14 delivery trucks on 11% biodiesel. I spoke with owner Tom Lippert by phone today and he said the reasons were twofold. First, the cost of the fuel is less than regular diesel (the soybean-based biodiesel is subsidized by the state of Illinois). The second reason is his staff saves time by not going to filling stations — they have the biodiesel fuel delivered to them and kept in a storage tank. They’ve been running the biodiesel since July 2005.
Liese Lumber has two locations in Belleville IL, one at 319 E. Main and another at 2200 S. Belt. Liese Lumber mainly services contractors but they are also open for consumer business. But their hours of 7am to 5pm Monday — Friday are not consumer friendly.
Thankfully the biodiesel in their trucks is friendly both to the environment, helps local soybean farmers and helps reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Congrats to Liese Lumber for taking this important first step.
Next time I’m buying something from a company that will need to be delivered I’m going to ask if they use biodiesel in their delivery trucks. The more we ask the more we can impact our own future.

We used Liese for all our framing lumber during our construction and I found them to be very helpful and professional. If you have it delivered, you don’t pay sales tax. They also have a pretty nice selection of hardwoods at reasonable prices
[REPLY – For clarity I should point out that if you live in Illinois you will pay sales tax on items delivered or not. For those of us in Missouri they cannot collect Missouri sales tax nor can they charge you Illinois sales tax. However, and this is a big one, Missouri law requires people to pay use tax on such purchases over a certain amount (I forget the amount). Some counties and municipalities also require use tax. It is still less than full sales tax. More than one contractor being audited by the state has gotten caught not paying use tax when required. – SLP]
Missouri requires use tax to be paid when your total out-of-state purchases exceed $2,000 in a year.
The current rate in the City of St. Louis is $0.06950. That’s lower than the sales tax rate of $0.07616. Also, the use tax funds in the City of St. Louis are earmarked for specific uses, including the Affordable Housing Trust Fund and the Health Care Trust Fund, as well as some other city operations.
Anyway, paying use tax is the law, and some of the money goes specifically to programs that help our low-income neighbors – not such a bad thing, right?
Back on topic: Does Missouri subsidize biodiesel?
[REPLY – I was thinking it was $2,000; thanks for the clarification. So all those online purchases can add up and exceed $2,000 rather quickly.

I think our order from them was about $1,900.00, so I guess we are in the clear. We would have purchased the lumber from Forest Park Lumber (Think it’s Oneil now) but my carpenter friend recommended Liese after several bad batches from a number of other lumber yards around town.

Based on Macroeconomic theory the more we demand and buy from retailers/businesses that incorporate local products or using biofuel, the more those companies will shift to those operations. We vote with our feet; likewise, we vote with our dollar on how businesses operate.
Why should businesses switch on their own to having biofuel? They need to see the financial need from us consumers buying from those that use biofuel and buy local products. We vote with the dollar!
