Downtown Partnership Ditches Old Website

March 27, 2006 Downtown 8 Comments

Downtown St. Louis has a fresh new website. The look is fresh & hip and it includes a directory of businesses. It still lacks any RSS feeds for updates but you can sign up to receive updates via email. Click here to see the new site.

Meanwhile Downtown Now!’s site is still behind the times with the “What’s Happening in 2004?” link to nowhere.

I like the site’s look however for their dropdown that says, “getting around” The only options listed are: Parking, Walking, & Public Transportation. Where is Cycling (Bicycling)? We need it listed as well since I have seen bike parking on Washington and Bike St. Louis is part of the city. Hope someone can let them know. I did see something in the “walking” section about biking on the riverfront trail. But Walking is not the same as Cycling. Plus people need to know there is bike parking so they can bike and shop. The more bikes the better!

    Keep Cycling,

[REPLY – Excellent observation Jeff! Yes, we need to keep cycling and bike parking on the radar screen. It seems like it was overlooked by the partnership. – SLP]

  2. Do not forget rollerblading. I bought some Salomon blades, and they get me around nicely, and I can even do some dangerous tricks!

  3. Jeff says:

I used to roller blade too ;0) did some skateboarding too. I went to the website and submitted an e-mail. Will let you know if they respond back regarding “cycling”.

I wonder if Jim Cloars updates will become PDF’s. All of the existing ones on the site are still Word Docs.

  5. Dustin says:

The Word documents are indeed frustrating. What year is this?

I am not so sure I would subscribe to their RSS feeds even if available, though. Their record for updating their site leads me to believe there is nothing to follow anyway. Luckily, MOST of the sites I follow on a regular basis are smart enough to have RSS feeds, but I doubt I would waste the space on my home page for their feeds. Snore…

Isn’t it illegal to rollerblade or skateboard downtown?

  7. Joe Frank says:

    Cyr appears to be correct.

    Ordinance 63839 (effective July 1996): http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/cco/ords/data/ord3839.htm
(sponsored by Phyllis Young and Marit Clark)

“The use of roller skates, in line skates, skateboards or similar devices shall be prohibited, by any person, upon any public street, alley, sidewalk, park, plaza, mall or other public area bounding the streets and alleys within the area bounded by Jefferson Avenue on the west, Washington Avenue on the north, Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard on the east, and Interstate 64 on the south.”

Exceptions: parades/events, “commuting to a specific destination”, and on bike paths (such as on the Archgrounds, maybe?).

So I guess if you said you were commuting on-street – rather than sliding up and down a granite panel at One Bell Center – you’d be ok.

  8. On their retail and restaurant guides they don’t even link to the individual businesses websites. WTF?
