Drama in Overland Interesting to Watch
Have you been watching the recent drama in the St. Louis County municipality of Overland, Missouri?
Newly elected mayor won by just four votes.
New mayor declares chief of police & city attorney positions vacant even though occupied by persons installed by prior mayor.
New mayor appoints replacements for chief of police & city attorney without approval of city council.
St. Louis County Prosecutor files suit questioning legality of new mayor’s actions.
Judge sets hearing date of May 15th, grants temporary restraining order keeping prior chief of police and city attorney in their jobs.
Mayor attempted to cancel tonight’s city council meeting.
The challenger that lost by four votes calls for a recount. Election results show that 46 votes ballots not counted in mayoral race.
It should be noted an amazing 32% of registered voters cast ballots in Overland’s recent elections. Impressive. Three candidates for mayor had very close totals: 964 vs. 1,111 vs. 1,115.
I haven’t the slightest idea how urban-minded the newly elected mayor or her challenger are, if at all. Anyone know more detail about Overland and the views of the various factions?

Yes I know the situation in quite well.
The candidate that lost by 4 votes Mary Beth Conlon was the Councilman of Ward 2 and is a life long resident. Within one year of being elected into her aldermanic seat she was elected Mayor Pro-Tem and is a tremendous leader. She is graduate of the University of Missouri St. Louis Public Policy Dept. and worked diligently to foster to attract the Centenial Park Way part of the Great Rivers Greenway River District AKA the River Ring into Overland. She brought in the East West Gateway Council of Local Governments to hire the City of Overland’s first City Administrator. She became very engaged with the St. Louis County Economic Council promoting the redevelopment of a Brownfield Site on Page Blvd. Mary Beth was a progressive candidate and ran a campaign that was top notch and equivalent to a well run State Rep Campaign. The central themes of her campaign were the revitalization of the neighborhoods and business districts, a redevelopment of the historic Downtown area and policies to enhance and uplift the lives of the residents. Mary Beth hosted osted public forums and had the backing of several state reps, state senators, and local mayors. Mary Beth united Republicans and Democrats alike. However on the last weekend of the race the woman who was elected Mayor and who now has managed to make Overland the laughing stock of St. Louis County put out some incredibly ugly and false material that I personally believe stopped people from coming to the polls. Now it appears that the person who won the race as documented in the Post Dispatch lied about having a degree, lied about being a registered nurse, and numerous other things she claims have since been disputed. In last Wednesdays Post Dispatch St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney called the New Mayor of Overland a “liar” with “zero credibility”
As a resident of Overland I certainly hope that a manual recount will be granted and that Mary Beth Conlon will prevail as the Mayor of Overland.
I was a classmate of Mary Beth’s at UMSL, and I’m certain that she could do a MUCH better job than this ridiculous Purzner woman.
Did you see the article about how Purzner claims to be a registered nurse but in fact never has been one? The State Nursing Board even sent her a letter to cease and desist a couple years back, but she continues.
These are the kind of politicians that really hold communities back. Overland has serious issues coming up related to development, such as the closure / reduction-in-force at the Military Records Center.
Is there any way that she can be recalled? All I can say to her is SHAME SHAME SHAME on you. The city should move ASAP to see her removed , recalled or a new election held. Anyway it goes she is going to cost the city big $$$.
[REPLY – I’m not sure of the procedures for recalling an elected official in Overland. I am, however, quite clear on the process in the City of St. Louis… – SLP]
I have been a resident of Overland for 8 years now and I believe all of the elected Alderman should be recalled. The city counsil has been making fools of the residents of Overland for a few years now. Have you never watched the counsil meeting via Charter? They never got anything accomplished because they were to busy arguing. I was embarrased long before this Purzner thing came to light. I voted for Purzner on her campaign that she would restore FREE trash service to us, and that she would reopen the city pool. These were the things that were important to me. I don’t agree with the way she went about things though and believe that she needs to be removed from office. It is time for a changing of the guards in Overland. People who can work together for the good of Overland not for personal gain. I wonder if Mr. Herman was on the city payroll for the Monday “supposed” counsil meeting.
Greetings just wanted to thank you for turning me on to this way cool blog I sincerely appreciate it Steve. Joe Frank how you are you? I’ve read your blog and congratulate you on your accomplishments. The saga in Overland continues. I feel like this is Gore V Bush redux and although I am a progressive democrat I hope my outcome is I end up being George Bush. I have updated my website and included some very recent articles about living in the OC (Overland City)! Things are quite interesting these days but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a change in the results of the election. I will post the petition on the website in a few days after I have it in PDF form. Keep your fingers crossed and who knows what will happen. As a student of Public Policy I can’t tell you what a rush this is! All the best and Steve thanks for your most gracious offer.
Mary Beth Conlon
Candidate for Mayor of Overland
Here’s a great article in today’s Post by Bill McClellan.

I have lived in Overland most of my life (all but 2-3 years) and have seen it all. One thing noone has mentioned is the outsiders influencing Ms Purzner. Mark Brown, former OC council member and current St Chas council member, was “run out of town” for some of the same dirty politics Purzner pulled in her campaign. She actively admits that she seeks advice from him on her actions. However, one needs to only go to St Chuck Watch to see that he is pulling the same things there that he did in Overland. And some of the other key characters are even the same. Purzner has brought in Chet Pleban as “acting city attorney”, who represents Mark on some issues. The McClellan column today speaks volumes on Ben Branch, whom she brought in as “acting police chief”. Waiting in the wings is Eric Tolen. If you want to know what he can bring to “the OC”, either check out St. Chuck Watch, read “Talk of Charleytown” in the Post, or look him up on various legal websites. The results of these searches should say he would not bring anything positive to our burg.
Look at what a mess Pleban and Branch made in Frontenac. Do you want these people to have any authority over you?
I am a resident of Illinois and recently became engaged to one of the residents in Overland. We are considering establishing a residence in Overland, but I must say that based on the unethical, dishonest and self centered egotistical behavior, that has been demonstrated by the “Mayor” Mrs. Purzner, there is some reluctance. I have been following this saga from the beggininig, and am I am a resident of Illinois and recently became engaged to one of the residents in Overland. We are considering establishing a residence in Overland, but I must say that based on the unethical, dishonest and self centered egotistical behavior, that has been demonstrated by the “Mayor” Mrs. Purzner, there is some reluctance. I have been following this saga from the beginning, and am increasingly amazed at the defiance and disrespect that the Mayor has shown the residents of Overland. She and her 3 “allied” Aldermen have made Overland and the political process a joke, locally and “Nationally”. The “would be” Mayor, assumes, just as she assumed she was a “Nurse” since she worked in the confines of a Medical facility, that she has the authority to create a “Dictatorship” (and do whatever she pleases)this includes the 3 allies that or focused on “their” apparent personal agendas as they see fit (or Misfit). I don’t know who is advising her, but they may want to apply for a position with the circus, along with the Mayor and her allied Alderman, because these folks look like a bunch of clowns! What is it going to take for them (The “would be Mayor and her corrupt crew”) to realize, that they themselves, based on their childish. Self centered behavior, have committed Political suicide for them and in the process, negatively impacted the future growth and prosperity of what was once seen as an incredible place to live?????
I heard that there was an “Overland Watch” article that was handed out, apparently to “Select” residents, written by Mrs. Purzner, in another smear & slander attempt…what is wrong with this picture?
We haven’t been privy to a copy and are very interested in seeing it if you happen to have a copy or know where we can find one.
Thanks in advance.
A very concerned ??Future??? Resident.
.
I have a copy of the “Overland Watch” Newspaper that was handed out. It was scary to say the least. It looks like a high school newspaper centering on petty fued and rumours and gossip. Accusations fly and the SLANT of who prints the paper is extremely obvious. It is an embarrassment to business owners and residents of Overland. As a business owner there it makes me want to tell people we are located in a different township. Overlands history of politics and squabbling has been going on so long that no one can speak to each other anymore in a civil manner. I do not think anything will change anytime soon. But hey…we do have PINK sidewalks now. That is supposed to draw shoppers here….*sigh*
Thanks Craig, I actually had no doubt that the content would be nothing less than what you described. Yep I was impressed with the Pink sidewalks! And as I entered the City limits I was amused when I noted thet the City limit signs came down a couple weeks ago. We maybe even be more amazed, at the “New” content that will appear on the re-erected signs. After all the new Mayor seems to have unlimited authority, so who knows you may not have to disavow living in Overland, it may no longer be “Overland” 🙂 Is there anyway that I can get a copy of the Overland Watch, I would be happy to reimburse you for copy and mailing fees.
Well I found some additional information on the Overland Watch, I can’t attest to it’s accuracy.

And the pieces fall into place…
I want to thank one of my merry band of misfits for an e-mail he sent me, as I scrolled through it I saw a name I recognized and the parts fell into place. The rag Overland Watch was published by J Kollmeyer publishing. Donna Dills AKA Sweet pickles is (or was I don’t know and don’t care) married to James Kollmeyer.
So we have to quit giving Skidmark the credit for the Overland Watch. It is the pickle family that published it skidmark probably only provided the presses.
