Metro’s Customer Service Denied Access to Urban Review

August 22, 2006 Public Transit 7 Comments

Yesterday I sent an email to Metro (formerly Bi-State Development) asking about their policy of running trains through areas where vehicular traffic has been halted due to real or perceived dangers (see In The Interest of Safety?). Well, I got a prompt response from someone in customer service asking me to forward what my post said (I had given them a link) because they were able to access Urban Review.

Interesting, very interesting.

Explanations range from the spectrum from they have a very strict policy on browsing and simply do not want employees reading a bunch of long-winded websites during work to Metro doesn’t like my positions on transit and wants their employees to only listen to management’s views. The truth is probably someone in the middle leaning toward the former.

As I copied and pasted the post into an email I just found it rather amusing.

Odd. I’ve noticed employees posting in the past. Perhaps that caused a change in policy.

Just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean that they aren’t really out to get you! Seriously, the reason is likely for productivity. The stats run between an hour a day to two being wasted by employees on average across the nation with diversions on the Internet.

[REPLY Oh geez, here we go. I’m not at all paranoid which is why I acknowleged it was more likely related to keeping employees productive. Please read the posts before trying to actually read something into them. – SLP]

They (Metro) should be open to your views since you are PROMOTING them as an option (metrobus / metrolink). I think they are a little crazy for thinking your blog is too negative on transit. Perhaps they just don’t like someone so outspoken or has ideas that may actually make their system better. Oh well keep up the good work!

As an organization, Metro has no opinion on Steve’s blog. The individual who made that statement was expressing an opinion that has never been stated, written or hinted as far as I know. In fact many Metro people enjoy the blog.

Metro has a policy (and an appropriate one) which blocks access to blogs for those individuals with internet access. If you have a specific business reason for obtaining access, you can obtain permission to “unblock” a specific blog.

If Metro did not have a policy like that, way to many people would spend time blogging and not working.

I was able to access the site just fine when I worked at the Metro Construction office.
