McCormack Baron Salazar Set to Renovate Shuttered Midtown Woolworth
Developer McCormack Baron Salazar has closed on the long anticipated project to renovate the former Woolworth Department Store building located at Grand and Olive in St. Louis Midtown area, just down the street from The Fox Theatre and next door to the Continental Building.
Above, taken last month, the building looks as it has for many years now. The Continental Building, once vacant for several decades, was fully renovated and restored a few years back.
Below is an artist rendering for the look once completed.
Project financing includes New Market Tax Credits. Tenants will be the headquarters for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, the Kranzberg Cultural Arts Center, Craft Alliance and likely a restaurant on the main floor. The National Conference of Big Brothers Big Sisters will be held in St. Louis in June 2008 as the project nears completion.
Congratulations to MBS and everyone that put this project together, I look forward to seeing the finished project in person. This building has to be one of the most striking we have in St. Louis.
I like the third floor lighting.
It’s great that it’s getting redeveloped but I sure wish all those windows wouldn’t remain blocked out as they are now.
If you pick up the book “St. Louis: Then and Now,” it’s got a photograph looking north on Grand from decades ago. Ironically enough, the building was vacant at the time the photo was taken, too.
Craft Alliance is moving? If so, I’m saddened by that, to be honest. I hope it’s an expansion, not a wholesale move.
Duh.
Just went to the Craft Alliance web site and it’s an expansion, not a move. Whew! Now St. Louis city and the Loop can both benefit. It’s all good.
am i misinterpreting the rendering or are there no windows on the ground floor?
The sign looks like its going to be an eletronic reader board, wrapping the building. It would be like the one inside Scottrade Center, with moving, illuminated, and brightly flashing words and images. True? That would be cool.
Adam, I think (I hope) it’s just the way they’re rendered … it’s a lot of work to draw all stuff inside of the building ….
it looks very Times Square to me. cool.
They must have a restaurant or retail if they expect to have foot traffic.
Bought my first 45 rpm there, Ain’t Noth’n But a Hound Dog, a couple of years later site of my first job.
Let’s hope that a viable restaurant goes into the first floor. The track record for restaurants surviving that close to The Fox has not been good. With exception of Vito’s of course.
