Parallel parking isn’t too difficult but you’d think it was based on how poorly some folks manage.
The Toyota Camry above was parked in such a way that the space for this meter looked like it was available. There was a car in front of this one too. If I had a smart fortwo I could have fit in the space behind this car and the next.
You just have to think the person thought that’s how you were suppose to park. Why else would you do that? Why would you park in such a way that it’s harder to open your car door and get out of your car unless you thought you had to. Are their people with a valid driver’s license who don’t know how to park at a meter? Maybe it was a new and young driver. I could have seen myself possibly doing this when I turned 16 and made my first trip downtown.
Better enforcement = better compliance. Get a ticket and you (hopefully) learn your lesson. Plus, to get a driver’s license, I’m not sure if knowing how to parallel park is still required or tested for.
[slp — Enforcement seems only to be if the meter is expired, not how they are parked. I know I had to parallel park when I took my driving test in 1983 — we went to the OKC Airport to find an actual place to parallel park.]
At least you still have parking meters. Tulsa is replacing ours with pay boxes and numbered spaces. It’s very hard to be sure you’re completely within the space without something vertical to use as a landmark.
parking like this will actually get you a $50 ticket for “parking outside of the meter zone” or something like that. expired meters are only $10. the funny thing is, if everyone who parks after you follows suit and parks in the same way, an entire row of cars can end up with $50 tickets on their windshields.
It seems to me the City is missing a revenue opportunity here–both with these geniuses and the ones who parallel park 3 feet from the curb! There were several cars parked like this in a row the last time I met people at Flannery’s for lunch. Luckily, I was driving the Miata so fit between two of them, and both meters were paid up to the max.
Unfortunately, we cannot really lay blame on the owner of this car without knowing what the layout looked like before this car parked. If a previous car had parked like this either behind or in front, this car would also be forced to park in such a way. I know that I would probably not pass up a spot that is open, just because another car had parked incorrectly. It’s hard to find open spots as it is…and who knows, maybe this car DID get a parking ticket, just not at the time this picture was taken…I’m just sayin…

As the parent of three teenagers, I can tell you that yes, Parallel Parking is still a required test, at least on the IL side.
