River des Peres Trash Bash on the Greenway
Cleaning up the planet sounds good but what can one person do?
A week from Saturday there is an event where you can make a difference:

The River des Peres Trash Bash will have clean-up sites throughout the entire River des Peres watershed. Several of the clean-up areas are along Great Rivers Greenway District trail projects. The clean-up base area, as well as registration and after clean-up festivities, will be along the River des Peres Greenway Trail on River des Peres Blvd between Morganford and Gravois (Fultz Field area) in St. Louis City [map link]. The clean-up promotes the connection of land and water through neighborhood and stream clean-ups, educating the public on how they can Make a Difference in their neighborhood, and the development and promotion of partnerships along River des Peres. Please come out and join us!
This event is a good excuse to get to know the River des Peres better. Volunteers are asked to register in advance. Now if only there was a way to volunteer to help get some real water in the river 24/7.

This is a great idea, but what about the toxicity of working in the river bed? They have yellow warning signs up about just that, and I have experienced the nausea and headache from having been down in there taking photos. Do they address the distinct possibility of volunteers getting ill while working?
Its a shame really – it looks so much better when its full of water. I know there was a plan to damn it and fill it with “clean” water. It could be used as a urban waterway for fishing, boating etc.
I did a trash pick up event like this by the Chain of Rocks Bridge and it was really a blast- a great opportunity to make a difference. If you register in advance for this one, I believe you get free food and drink (perhaps even some free Schlafly beer if the rumors are true)!
Cleaning up is fine, but when is somebody gonna fix the lights on the pedestrian bridge? Only two are on now, vandals(neighborhood brats) have broken half of them. I saw them doing it a couple years ago and called the police, but nothing ever happened.Same with the paving stones, the brats dug some out at the entrance to the bridge, at least the cops did show up, but all that happened was some sand was put in, the pavers were never put back in and they were right there in the river where the little jerks threw them. In fact, theyre still in there, if anydody feels like fixing it now.But at least somebody was on the ball and sandblasted the graffiti off the bridge right away. Thank you, whoever you are. Now lets get the rest of it put back together, and cleaned up.
