1. I just read something about Louisville, I think, passing a rule against automatic white page distribution.
2. Though it is really an outdated practice and a waste of paper, we ought to be glad right, since the yellow pages is all we have left of Southwestern Bell. I understand their Gateway Mall fronted real estate is most just for the phone book. :o/
The yellow pages (generic term) is an advertising medium, just like spam and pop-up ads on the internet, ads in newspapers and junk mail. According to Wikipedia, “In the United States, the predominant yellow pages are the Dex One Corporation's DEX, the AT&T Real Yellow Pages, Yellowbook, and the Verizon Superpages”. Here, we seem to get just/both the AT&T and the Yellowbook versions. These days, some people still like to get hard copies, so even though the majority don't care/don't want them, the economics assume that enough eyes will see what's distributed to justify it economically, if not environmentally. (Personally, I'd trade one unwanted phone book every six months for the daily deluge of junk snail mail.)
White pages are request only. Yellow pages are still a cash cow of advertising $, so they wouldn't want to demolish their distribution #s…even when the VAST majority probably sit collecting dust just like these. I throw them in w/ my recycling pickup one at a time (there are usually only 4-6 in my bldg).
I consider it litter on my property. I have a “No Solicitation” sign and that includes heavy, yellow books full of adverts. I hardly use my front door as I park in the alley and usually don't notice these until they are rain-soaked and worthless. Not to mention even heavier.

I get several yellowpages a year without requesting them.

I just discovered that you can opt-out of yellow page delivery in your area. Here is a link to the site Yellow Pages Association site: http://www.ypassociation.org/AM/Template.cfm?Se…
