Volvo more important than pedestrian crosswalk
I was pleased last year when the city finally painted the crosswalk lines and installed a “no parking here to corner” sign on St. Charles St at 10th St. Today the driver of a blue Volvo decided their car was more important than than pedestrians who need the crosswalk and ramp.
Yes, I called the police to report the illegally parked Volvo but who knows if they made it to ticket the car. I left my card under the wiper and I hope the owner reads this. If so, here is a message just for him/her:
I use a wheelchair and I had to go a block out of my way — twice — because you decided to park so that the ramp I need was blocked. Thank you so very much for visiting downtown today, please come back often. I called the police and gave them your plate number so they could help welcome you.
I’m guessing where they live they don’t have pedestrians.

steve, this is why god invented keys. 🙂
Agreed. While admittedly less diplomatic, carving my call-back number into the drivers side door with something sharp would have been my first impulse.
A little vindictive, but completely justified. It's when the general population refuses to put up with petty violators of common courtesy that places are changed for the better. Good work.
It's not vindictive at all; keying his car would have been vindictive.
Honestly, I was nervous that I would see a picture of my own Volvo poorly parked somewhere downtown. It is so easy to justify leaving your car illegally and/or inconsiderably parked when running a quick errand, particularly after a frustrating experience trying to find a parking spot. These kinds of things are bad habits that come from living in a city where just a few years ago nobody lived downtown, and although I am working on correcting my own bad habits (my pedestrian side yells at my motorist alter-ego often), I still do stupid things like this. Although this driver does need a reminder that pedestrians deserve preference over cars, he is unfortunately not the minority in our region, and vandalizing his car would most likely have made the situation even worse.
I never do stupid things like this.
No matter how many people may be downtown, now or at any given time, there is no excuse for this behavior. After all, if there's one thing downtown has tons of, it's parking. Try and find a single intersection uninfested by a surface lot or ugly-ass garage. At some, all four corners are dedicated to parking! The problem is motorists who consider only spaces that are 11 feet or less from their destination.
. . . but don'tcha know, it IS all about ME!
This is what happens in car-centric cities. This, and obesity, diabetes, heart problems…
Steve – How do you know that the owner was not a downtown resident. Was there something on/in this car to indicate that they were “visiting”. Just curious. Visitors don't have the market cornered on inconsideration.
