Celebrating Six Years Of UrbanReviewSTL This Month

October 1, 2010 Downtown, Politics/Policy, Site Info 5 Comments

Halloween marks the sixth anniversary of this blog. In that time I’ve published over 2,300 posts. To celebrate I’m going to have some Top Six lists this month.

To start things off here is my Top Six Priorities I want to work on in the next 12 months (short term):

6) Moving the taxi stand off the sidewalk in front of the convention center.

5) Getting good policy, procedures and oversight in place regarding valets.

4) Opening up food vendor options (stand & truck) throughout the region.

3) Increased bike parking in the region.

2) Some municipality in the region to begin adopting form-based zoning, even if for a small area.

1) Switching city elections to be non-partisan.

These are not the region’s top priorities but what I’m personally interested in working on.  Discuss.

  1. Had my own run in w/ problem #6 just this week. I HATE that taxi stand. I don't understand why anyone ever thought the idea of cabs driving AT tourists/conventioneers/DT workers on what appears to be a large pedestrian plaza was EVER a good idea.

#4 is definitely moving forward in terms of publicity. Trucks seem to be having a bit easier time, not sure why.

Congratulations on six years, Steve. Here's to many more.

On Priority No. 1 — what do you see as advantages of having elections being non-partisan?

    • i'd ask you what is the advantage of holding a primary with a general a month later? Seldom are candidates in either challenged, a huge waste of money.

#5 – I assume valet parking, not valets at the horse track 😉

#3 – Parking is not the real issue, homicidal driver attitudes (among a minority), combined with physical barriers (bridges that don't accomodate cyclists well) are.

#1 – Non-partisan is much lower on my list than term limits and/or better pay. I assume the goal is better-quality representation. If so, making public service a viable option is more important than labels.

My biggest priority is moving St. Louis from the Rust Belt to the Cool City category. Both the city and the region are stagnant, for a variety of reasons, while other regions are doing better and growing. Like they say, “it's the economy, stupid”, and if we want more and better jobs, we need to have more reasons for companies to be here. And more and better jobs will mean more resources available for reinvestment in our neighborhoods . . .

“Switching city elections to be non-partisan” Brilliant! I always wondered why it was the custom for yanks to do this. It would open the field to many more candidates and not force them to fit into partisan boxes.
