February 3, 2012 Downtown, Featured, Real Estate 18 Comments

Last night winners were finally announced in the Lovin the Lou contest:

The Laurel Apartments is asking St. Louisans to show them why they love St. Louis in a ‘Lovin the Lou Video Contest’ beginning July 8th. The prize for the most love (and a little creativity and video savvy) is Free Rent For A Year at the Laurel Apartments in Downtown’s Mercantile Exchange District!

Contest Details

The Laurel Apartments will run a city-wide ‘Lovin the Lou’ video contest for an incredible opportunity to live rent-free for one year at The Laurel Apartments in Downtown St. Louis. The winner will also be the featured blogger on the’ Lovin the Lou Blog’ which will chronicle their crazy cool adventures and experiences around their new neighborhood in Downtown St. Louis.

This contest is an effort to identify what makes St. Louis unique and remarkable and to find the next ambassador for St. Louis. The Laurel Apartments is asking St. Louisans to submit a 2-minute video that captures how they are Lovin the Lou!

“We want to showcase the people and character that make St. Louis, especially downtown, a great place to live and work,” said Melissa DeCicco, Marketing Director for Mills Properties, “We know it’s fabulous, but it is time for us to show and tell!”

I served as one of the judges in the contest, along with Jeff Vines (STL_Style), Bill Streeter (Brick by Chance and Fortune) and developer Amos Harris.  I can tell you it was not easy to pick the final winners, but we did come to agreement:

Lou means toilet or bathroom. Don’t you all know that?

I think that usage is spelled “loo”.

I like how they’ve opened up the courtyard at the Laurel. Googleview shows it completely covered by aluminum/windows.

The grand prize winner was clearly a step above the rest and as good as (or likely better) than any tourism campaign videos I have seen for the Lou lately.

As far as the Loo being slang for a WC…not around here.

    Yes, please; we’re not British.

Wow, the courtyard is a dramatic 180 from what it was when I was on a tour of various buildings DT: A wet, foreboding pigeon roost, with a rotting floor covered in debris and droppings. It’s nice to see that potential become reality.

  11. The Laurel Gardens turned out beautiful!  I can’t wait to see it in the spring when all the flowers are in bloom!  Here is a picture of the Gardens from the event last night – looking straight up you could see the moon and clear sky.  Thanks again Steve for being one of our fabulous judges!  laurelstl.com

I have only watched the winner, I will try watch the rest over the weekend.  It is excellent, a sure winner, but note there is nothing about connectivity. A city is motion, a city is the movement system according to the late Edmund Bacon, author of “The Design of Cities”.
You may put on a great event in the world (say Woodstock), but if it does not have continuous life and support of the culture, then the idea fails over time.
Connectivity is the soul of cities and the ongoing support for culture.
Despite super highlights, as the film demonstrates, the City of St. Louis is not a city in the true sense of the word.
It is not a comprehensive, organic entity that has humans as the blood of existence. Instead it a one on display of individual success That is great, But if it is not part of a larger city, thus it is flawed. There is a lack of comprehensive urban concepts that unite us all. I think the winning film is very good though, there is clearly skill in film making evident.
