Public Meet & Greet Wednesday March 2 (tonight) ; 5pm-8pm

Local Architect Frank Scherr is hosting a meet & greet at his office/home located at 3137 Meramec (across from St. Anthony of Padua). Refreshments will be served. Stop by, have a drink and chat with Steve Patterson. Talk with other volunteers and supporters. This is not a fundraiser so we won’t be asking for money – just good conversation!

I look forward to seeing everyone tonight.

Reflections on a Very Urban Day

Benton Park

Just before the election the Mayor presided over a special ribbon cutting ceremony. This afternoon the ribbon was cut on a rebuilt home at 2201 Arsenal in Benton Park.

This house sat vacant for 20 years while it was in legal limbo. It was in tragic shape. Luckily Millennium Restoration and Development came along to renovate the building. During construction came a buyer that loaded the place with some major upgrades. Sales price is reportedly in excess of $700K.

The home owners spoke at the ceremony talking about how they built a new home in Chesterfield (a new money suburb) about 6 years ago. None of their neighbors there seemed to care. They expressed their thrill at being a part of a real neighborhood rather than just a subdivision.

Polish Falcons

After touring all three floors of the house I ventured up to the Polish Falcons for their fish fry supporting St. Stanislaus Kostka. The place was packed! For only $6.50 they had a choice of Jack Salmon, Catfish or Cod; choice of two sides, desert and drinks. I ran into many friends – young and old. The Polish Falcons are located at 2013 St. Louis Avenue. Only 3 more Fridays remain!

Left Bank Books

I finished up the evening at the artist’s reception for a new show of Alan Brunettin. From the exhibit:

“Alan Brunettin’s urban landscapes illuminate the beauty in mature environments. Limiting himself to just three colors per canvas, Brunettin nevertheless exerts a brawny palette. Within his richly textured compositions, the patina of age signifies not decay, but accrued wisdom.”

Check it out at Left Bank Books, 399 N. Euclid, through April 3, 2005.

Patterson to Speak at Upcoming Rehabber’s Club Class

February 13, 2005 Events/Meetings Comments Off on Patterson to Speak at Upcoming Rehabber’s Club Class

I’m happy to announce that I will be part of a panel at Tuesday’s Rehabber’s Club Class. The class title is called Urban Revitalization and You. Below is an excerpt from the class description:

Driving along some streets in our city, have you ever wondered about why some areas prosper and others seemingly, do not? Why, despite many obvious positive attributes, some neighborhoods just look worn out? Have you ever wished that, as a rehabber and concerned citizen, you could do something about that? Well, this might just be the class to start you on your way.

The Rehabber’s Club Classes are $10 per person and are held at the Central Reform Congregation at Kingshighway & Waterman. Click here for more information.

See you Tuesday February 15th at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm),

Frying Fish for St. Stanislaus Kostka

February 11, 2005 Events/Meetings, North City, Religion Comments Off on Frying Fish for St. Stanislaus Kostka

I’m generally not one to advocate the Friday fish fry of a local church but in this case I’m making an exception. The Polish Falcons are having Fish Fry’s to help benefit St. Stanislaus Kostka Church from the bully on Lindell. Every Friday between now and March 18th you can get a complete dinner including desert and beverage for only $6.50. If you need more desert afterwards just take a stroll down to Crown Candy Kitchen.

If you click on the upcoming events section of St. Stans website you’ll get time and location information. If you’ve never been to the Polish Falcons for an event you are in for a treat. I can guarantee you’ll have a good time!

Downtown Brown Bag Meet & Greet a Huge Hit

February 11, 2005 Events/Meetings, Politics/Policy Comments Off on Downtown Brown Bag Meet & Greet a Huge Hit

Business owners and community leaders Margie Newman and Alan Brunettin hosted a brown bag meet & greet for me today at their downtown gallery, Urbis Orbis.

urbis_orbis.jpg

The group in attendance was decidedly progressive and with the exception of one person, all live outside my ward. This is a good thing. With strong support from both in the ward and outside the ward money is coming in the door (via PayPal) daily and volunteers are lining up to help. Today’s group represented the preservation movement, former Metropolis officers, architects (yes, plural) and other small business owners in the city.

As you’d expect, nobody from Civic Progress was there to wish me well.

While the discussion centered mostly on my campaign we touched on issues relevant to the entire city such as updating the city’s antiquated zoning codes and setting out a vision for the future beyond the predictable 5-year consolidated plan strategy.

To Margie & Alan – thank you so much for arranging this event. This combined with all the coffee’s I’ve been doing in private homes throughout the ward will make a difference on March 8th.
