Readers Optimistic About The City+Arch+River Project
Readers in the poll last week responded they were optimistic about the City+Arch+River project to connect the Gateway Arch to downtown.
Q: Optimistic or Pessimistic About The City+Arch+River Project?
- Optimistic 197 [62.54%]
- Pessimistic 85 [26.98%]
- Neutral 16 [5.08%]
- Other: 9 [2.86%]
- Unsure/No Opinion 8 [2.54%]
I’ve gone from optimistic to neutral since funding seems to be a challenge.
- Unhappy that the project doesn’t include eliminating the depressed I-70 lanes.
- impatient! when does construction start?! NOW!!!
- For the better
- Portion will get done but not sure about Metro East projects.
- cautiously optimistic.
- It still won’t truly connect the city to the arch grounds.
- Pessimistic about it being completed on time.
- disappointed with the choices
- Biggest waste of money.
I think we’ll see something completed by the 50th anniversary party on October 28, 2015 but it will be significantly scaled back.

Agree, funding (or a lack thereof) is key. We have yet to see any real proposals presented for a local source, and given the gridlock in Washington, finding significant funds for what could be viewed/targeted as a “pork barrel” project will be a challenge, as well. This could easily become the next “bridge to nowhere”. What’s really needed is something like what’s in place for the Forest Park,or the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a non-profit dedicated to raising funds: http://www.statueofliberty.org/ http://www.forestparkforever.org/
To activate meaningful funding sources, you need a meaningful project plan…and City+Arch+River hasn’t created one. They’re putting all their energy into this “Park Over The Highway” when the real focus should be the expanded museum and entrance and weaving the park into the whole of the City (and yes, that means highway removal). Nothing about the current plan is transformative, and backers/supporters are speaking to this with their silence.
It seems to me that the bigger issue is sthat from Broadwaqy and 4th St. between Chestnut and Market, as one looks east, you don’t see the river becasue of the grassy berm. If one could see the river, the connection between downtown and the river would be made, we would once again be grounded to our geographic starting point.
