Celebrating Blog’s 19th Anniversary

Nineteen year ago I started this blog as a distraction from my father’s heart attack and slow recovery. It was late 2004 and social media & video streaming apps didn’t exist yet — or at least not widely available to the general public. Blogs were the newest means of …

Four Recent Books From Island Press

Book publisher Island Press always impresses me with thoughtful new books written by people working to solve current problems — the subjects are important ones for urbanists and policy makers to be familiar and actively discussing. These four books are presented in the order I received them. ‘Justice and …

New Siteman Cancer Center, Update on my Cancer

This post is about two indirectly related topics: the new Siteman Cancer Center building under construction on the Washington University School of Medicine/BJC campus and an update on my stage 4 kidney cancer. Let’s deal with the latter first. You may have noticed I’ve not posted in three months, …

Everyone has been asking for a map of the 25th ward so here it is:

As you can see the edges of the ward are a bit cut up from block to block. If you’ve got friends or family in the 25th ward be sure to send them a link to my website.

Thank you!

Patterson to Speak at Upcoming Rehabber’s Club Class

February 13, 2005 Events/Meetings Comments Off on Patterson to Speak at Upcoming Rehabber’s Club Class

I’m happy to announce that I will be part of a panel at Tuesday’s Rehabber’s Club Class. The class title is called Urban Revitalization and You. Below is an excerpt from the class description:

Driving along some streets in our city, have you ever wondered about why some areas prosper and others seemingly, do not? Why, despite many obvious positive attributes, some neighborhoods just look worn out? Have you ever wished that, as a rehabber and concerned citizen, you could do something about that? Well, this might just be the class to start you on your way.

The Rehabber’s Club Classes are $10 per person and are held at the Central Reform Congregation at Kingshighway & Waterman. Click here for more information.

See you Tuesday February 15th at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm),

Signs of Change!

February 13, 2005 25th Ward Comments Off on Signs of Change!

We’ve now got over a hundred signs throughout the ward – on Meramec, on Grand, on Virginia, on Taft… Well, you get the idea. Signs of change are all over the ward. My signs are what the best dressed yards are wearing this election cycle!

signsofchange.jpg

If you’d like a sign for your yard simply send me an email with your name & address and someone will get you a sign within 24 hours. Be sure to talk to your neighbors and ask them if they’d like a yard sign as well.

Also, if you can volunteer to help distribute literature within the ward and/or work a couple of hours at the polls on election day (March 8th) send an email to volunteer@25thward.com with your name, address and phone number.

Your support is greatly appreciated!!!

Western Lanes selling off their wooden lanes?

February 11, 2005 25th Ward Comments Off on Western Lanes selling off their wooden lanes?

Over on the Urban St. Louis Forum some are saying recently closed Western Lanes is selling off the wooden lanes. Most of the discussion centers on Slay vs. Smith but this closed 25th Ward business was discussed.

If Western Lanes is indeed selling the wooden lanes for use in another bowling alley the likelihood of another company coming and reopening the bowling alley are greatly diminished. I’m making some inquiries to determine the status of the lanes and potential sale of the building.
